Julian Koski is president and co-chief executive officer of Transparent Value.
He is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the firm. He works with the
management team to formulate and implement the firm's business strategy. Julian
is also responsible for executing the firm's sales and marketing plan, and for
developing strategic partnerships with financial institutions.
In 1984, Julian emigrated from South Africa to the United States and founded
Financial Feasibilities. From 1984 to 1988, Julian co-authored CFO Advisor, a
corporate finance advisory service designed to help companies identify
value-building opportunities. During his tenure at Financial Feasibilities,
Julian was retained by the accounting firm Laventhol & Horwath to provide
financial advisory services to a number of its clients.
In 1990, Ernst & Young acquired the CFO Advisor methodology. Julian was hired
to conceive a corporate finance and investment analysis service and put it into
practice. More than 400 Ernst & Young partners were trained to use the
methodology as it was deployed throughout the organization's practices,
including auditing, financial advisory and entrepreneurial services. Julian was
also retained by Ernst & Young to consult on client engagements.
In 1996, Julian teamed up with Inc. magazine to form Financial Resource
Group LLC, an investment bank that specialized in providing corporate finance
advisory and capital formation services to emerging-growth companies. He also
created FRG Equities, a venture fund that provided seed capital to startups.
Faced with ballooning valuations during the course of investment decisions he
made on behalf of FRG, Julian recognized the need for an alternative investment
approach. As a result, he created a unique investment methodology that FRG
employed for its private equity investments.
Julian has been a presenter at Inc. magazine conferences on valuation,
venture-capital funding and value-based compensation. He has lectured at the
Massachusetts Institute of Technology's "Birthing of Giants" program on
subjects such as valuation and performance measurement.
Julian studied at the University of Witwatersrand (Bachelor of Accountancy) and
the University of South Africa (Bachelor of Commerce).
